On Thursday, Greenpeace published a study on energy consumption and choices made by IT companies including Akamai, Amazon.com (Amazon Web Services), Apple, Facebook, Google, HP, IBM, Microsoft, Twitter, and Yahoo, entitled "How Dirty Is Your Data?". The study roundly criticizes the sector, especially Facebook, for using "dirty energy" ? power produced from hydrocarbon based sources, especially coal ? to meet growing IT demand. It also criticized companies for concealing details about their own, overall energy footprint and practices. Greenpeace specifically noted (excerpt from the environmental activists' own summary): Data centers, which house the explosion of virtual information, currently consume 1.5 to 2 percent of all global electricity and are growing at a rate of 12 percent each year; Companies in the sector, as a whole, do not release information on their energy use and its associated global warming emissions...

As many self-healing polymers as we've seen roll across our screens, we never really tire of them -- chalk it up to our unending quest for perfection, but we like our gadgets devoid of nicks and scratches. Lucky for us, a team of scientists that shares our need for clean has produced a material that fixes its imperfections in a mere 60 seconds when exposed to UV light. The typically rigid material basically melts down when exposed to rays of a specific wavelength, allowing it to fill in any nicks or dings. When the light is lifted, the polymer goes back to its original form, and voila -- the surface is like new. Its creators say the material could be used on everything from cars to dining room tables, but we've already come up with laundry list of devices that could do with a truly scratch resistant surface. Video of the stuff in action after the break.

hp google cloud print
HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you're ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you've got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well -- like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We're curious, though -- how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners -- major players like HP -- have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Symbian Tablet computers Talk time Technology Technophile

DRS Technologies has been produced rugged, hardcore gear for some time, and they aren't stopping now. The company just announced that their ARMOR X10gx rugged tablet has been approved for connectivity on the Sprint 3G network. This certification will enable ARMOR customers that utilize the integrated WWAN capabilities of the X10gx on Sprint?s network, and honestly, it'll be a rarity when it comes out. It's tough to find WWAN-enabled tablets right now (aside from just a handful of newcomers), but a rugged one? That's pretty much unheard of.
The ARMOR X10gx met several technical requirements to achieve certification on Sprint?s network. The fully rugged tablet was tested in several key functional areas, including: antenna performance, network selection, network impact, regulatory confirmation, and data connection management. If you aren't familiar with the device, it weighs 4.7lbs. and sports Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi and an integrated Gobi 2000 WWAN module. It's certified to MIL-STD-810G for extremes in temperature, vibration, shock and drops, and carries an ingress protection (IP) rating of 67, which means it is fully protected against dust and can withstand the effects of immersion in water to depths up to one meter.
There's also a 10.4" sunlight-visible display, a Core 2 Duo chip and a 64GB SSD; Windows 7 Ultimate / Business are the OS options. There's no telling how much it'll cost when it comes to Sprint, but for those who need it, we're sure the price premium will be worthwhile.

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos
Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 -- and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla's rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox's new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we're not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new 'channel changing' technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel -- the value doesn't matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you'll be able to switch channel, but it doesn't do anything just yet (image after the break). Here's hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

Blink and you might miss it: hard-to-see turn signals built into a bike helmet

The Blink Helmet may have won a prize at the 2010 Seoul Cycle Design Competition, but it still doesn?t impress me. At first, the helmet seems like a great idea: It integrates flashing turn signals into its sides, and has red and white lamps rear and front for safer nighttime riding.

But then we find out how it works. To signal, you reach up and touch the lamp, whereupon it starts to flash. Then, once you have completed your turn, you need to reach up again to switch it off. This, remember, takes the place of a traditional hand-signal which only requires you to remove your hand from the bar once.

And those side-mounted lights don?t look too visible from the front or the rear, which is where the people who need to see them will be.

I can?t help but think that the kind of person who would buy and use this lid is the same kind of person that already makes clear hand signals whilst in traffic. And if you say that hand signals are hard to see at night, then you should just go buy some reflective cuffs for your arms.

But never mind. The Blink concept still hasn?t moved beyond the stage of CG mockup, so there?s little danger of it making it into stores anytime soon.

Direct TV HBO streaming

Remember a couple of days ago when we had a look at HBO Go, a new video streaming service in the works for HBO subscribers?  The video posted had a not-so-subtle hint that the service would launch on May 2, and it seems that Direct TV has confirmed this via their official Twitter account.

No word on what phones are going to be part of the "selected" few, but it stands to reason that it will be a DRM requirement of sorts, much like Netflix is doing.  I guess we'll know all the details shortly, as May is almost upon us. [@DIRECTV via @BigRickz10]

ChromeLite ASCII extension
Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here's your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn't really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted -- such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) -- and some fun ASCII art, but that's about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work -- so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools' joke -- and indeed, an annoying 'you can uninstall this!' message appears at the top of every page -- but we're kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by "eating" the dirt; or so he thinks. That's how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you're not really a toilet cleaner after all -- you're a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that's smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow -- and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it's a really cute game, and there's no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you're able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can't touch any critter larger than yourself - you'll get "bitten" and become smaller. In the beginning you're so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you're big enough that touching larger animals doesn't kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you're not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don't touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It's available for iOS, too.

Firefox 4 save tabs
When Firefox 4's tab grouping tool, Panorama, had its keyboard shortcut changed to the finger-breaking combo of Ctrl+Shift+E, we thought Panorama would get dropped before FF4's final release -- but, thankfully, it made the cut!

If you've used Firefox 4 and Panorama, you might have noticed that Mozilla's new browser doesn't always save your tab groupings when you close the browser -- a bit of a pain, if you spend a long time setting up the perfect groups! This is tied into the removal of the 'Save and Quit' dialog box -- and enabling Panorama tab group saving is just a matter of re-enabling the Save and Quit dialog.

Open a new tab and head to about:config. Click through the warning and type 'quit' into the filter box. Double click browser.showQuitWarning to change its value to true (see image after the break). That's it -- now you'll have the option of saving your tabs, and thus tab groups, when you close Firefox.

O'reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one "Deal of the Day", which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they've created a discount code -- DDJPN -- that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they've raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you've been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.

Despite enormous sales of the iPad and iPad 2, it seems like the digital publishing world isn't quite ready to support the digital magazine editions coveted by media giants like Conde Nast. This is the company, if you'll remember, that was busting to get iPad editions ready before the iPad had even been announced. Spurned by daily-deal site Groupon, Google is now testing Google Offers, its own service for sending users deeply discounted offers for local businesses, starting with Portland, Oregon.

Yes, it?s YADDS (Yet Another Daily Deal Site), but Google has the advantage of already having both millions of users and advertisers.

Google reportedly tried to buy Groupon for $6 billion in December, only to be rebuffed. Groupon, based in Chicago, exploded in popularity in the recession, likely becoming the fastest-ever billion-dollar corporation. After spawning dozens of copycat sites, Groupon is now looking to IPO.

The beta of Google Offers is launching in Portland, and a splash screen prompting users to sign up began showing up Thursday.

Google confirmed that Google Offers is now official.

?Today we launched a marketing campaign inviting Portlanders to sign up for a test of Google Offers ? to get great deals delivered right to their inboxes,? a company spokeswoman said by e-mail. ?Offers is part of an ongoing effort at Google to make new services that give consumers great deals while helping connect businesses with customers in new ways.?

Google is also offering users in five other locations ? New York City Downtown, New York City Midtown, New York City Uptown, Oakland-East Bay in California, and San Francisco ? the chance to sign up.

Businesses interested in testing Google Offers can fill out a form to join the beta.

In the world of Internet startups people can become obsessed with the function of a product or app, often ignoring how a company can change the dynamics of a market just through its sheer existence. More often than not, it is not just a case of just having a better technology than the other guy. Equally it can be about a creating an incursion into a competitors' space which forces them to manoeuvre, destroying value for them, and creating value for yourself. No greater example exists of this today as the dramatic moves being made around the rumoured sale of Tweetdeck. I have been talking to sources well acquainted with the issue and what they have to say suggests a fascinating drama - which we are about to see played out.
